Hacking For Food Waste

April 23, 2022 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Free
3 hour virtual coding program for girls and boys (4-8th grade) with Code.org’s App Lab and Zoom.

Food loss and waste is food that is not eaten. The causes of food waste or loss are numerous and occur throughout the food system, during production, processing, distribution, retail and food service sales, and consumption. Overall, about one-third of the world’s food is thrown away.

Food loss and waste is a major part of the impact of agriculture on climate change and other environmental issues. Moreover, food waste that is not handled or reclaimed properly, i.e. through composting, can have many negative environmental consequences

Join Random Hacks of Kindness Junior and a volunteer from Sustainable Southbury to talk about the impact of Food Waste on the environment and to learn ways to address the issue.

Sustainable Southbury exists to advance Southbury towards a Sustainable, Resilient, Net Zero Community. Sustainable Southbury assists, advises, educates, and helps drive action by municipal leaders, schools, residents, and businesses. They envision a sustainable community that embraces multiple human needs in a collaborative decision-making process to harness the power of the community and help shape our collective, more sustainable future.

By creating apps focusing on Food Waste, you will experience first hand how you can use technology to create positive change.
