Hacking for the Ocean

June 4, 2022 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Free
3 hour virtual coding program for girls and boys (4-8th grade) with Code.org’s App Lab and Zoom.

The ocean is a huge body of saltwater that covers about 71 percent of Earth’s surface and it accounts for 96.5 percent of all Earth’s water. Protecting our ocean is extremely important.

Right now, the ocean is facing more pressure from human activity than ever before. Ocean warming, overfishing, marine debris, coral bleaching, and pollution fill our seas. Thankfully, there is also an unprecedented amount of people studying these pressures to find ways we can turn them around! Unfortunately, these findings often go unnoticed or are misunderstood by non-scientists.

That’s why Ellie Jones created Everblue. The team from Everblue are dedicated to empowering ocean-minded lifestyles by increasing scientific literacy. They use the internet and social media to share summaries of marine research followed by suggestions for sustainability tips.

Ellie Jones will share her organization’s journey with us and together we can create apps to help change people’s actions for the better.

By creating apps focusing on Marine Science and Scientific Literacy, you will experience first hand how you can use technology to create positive change.
